Loretta B. Furey (nee Boyan). Beloved wife of Dr. Joseph George Furey for 64 years; dear mother of Dr. Erin Furey (Susan Kane Furey), Sharon Furey-Stilson (David Stilson), Nancy Furey (Robert Sadowski), Timothy Furey (Polly Chiviles Furey), Bonnie Boehnlein (Thomas Boehnlein), and Dr. Christopher Furey (Meg Walsh Furey); cherished grandmother of Elisabeth Furey, Krista Furey, Liam Stilson, Daniel Stilson, Gregory Sadowski, Katy Sadowski, Kelley Furey Wittkopp (Rick Wittkopp), Melanie Furey, George Furey, and Eamonn Furey; loving great grandmother of beautiful young Abigail Wittkopp. Born and raised in Englewood, New Jersey, Loretta graduated from Columbia University School of Nursing in New York City. There she met her husband, Joseph Furey (“George”) who was receiving his medical education. They were married in 1948. She began her nursing career at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and later at Time Magazine. The couple moved to France in 1953, where Dr. Furey served as a General Medical Officer in the Army and Loretta cared for their first two children. Upon returning to the United States in the mid 1950’s, the young family settled in Pepper Pike, where they have since lived. Drawn by the love and support of their parents, all the Furey children have remained in the Cleveland area with their own families. Loretta was a dedicated, caring mother and wife for over 60 years. When her youngest child was a teenager, she returned to nursing, joining her husband’s Orthopedic Surgery Practice in Euclid as Nurse and Practice Manager. Together with her husband’s skill and expertise, Loretta’s dedication and caring touch affected untold numbers of grateful patients. Upon retirement she spent time as an avid gardener and amassed many Grand Master points playing bridge at an expert level. She was a dedicated but unassuming philanthropist for many causes. However, her true love later in life was her grandchildren. “Grammy” was beloved by all 10 of her grandchildren, serving many roles, including trusted babysitter, loyal friend, reliable confidant, and wonderful maker of “Grammy Cakes”. Her most cherished times were those spent with her entire family at her house for birthdays, holidays, weddings, or impromptu gatherings. Even as her health began to decline in the past year, Loretta continued to gather the family together for time spent filled with love, comfort and good company. Her family will miss her eternally pleasant demeanor, always caring nature, selfless devotion to family and friends, and the joy and happiness she brought to all she touched. She is most certainly in a better place, along with her beloved sister Marion and brother Frances (Bud) who preceded her in passing. In this day and age, simple kindness is often in short supply, but for those who knew and loved Loretta, this was never the case. Funeral Mass Tuesday, 10am at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Louise was born in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec and raised in Montreal, and graduated from McGill University with a Masters of Social Work. Moving to Cleveland in the early 1970s, Louise had a long career serving as an oncology social worker at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and University Hospitals. She also helped launch a professional association for oncology social workers. In her retirement, she taught and was an advisor to medical students at Case Western Reserve University. An avid traveler, arts enthusiast, and lifelong learner, Louise enjoyed chamber music and symphony concerts, art exhibits, music classes, Senior Scholars classes, the Discussion Day Committee at CWRU, and multiple book clubs. Habenstein, Alfred Louis

Alfred Louis Habenstein, age 90, passed away on March 6, 2012. Dearest uncle of Danial and Carol Basch of Mayfield Heights; Beloved brother of the late Louise Basch, Helen Zimmerman, Theresa Curtis, and Carlos Areces; Son of the late Louis Habenstein and Anna Mier. Al was a proud veteran, having worked in communications in the Army Air Force during WWII, even though he was a qualified marksman. Serving in London during the Blitz, he was assigned to keep communication lines open in the midst of incoming V1 and V2 rockets. He was reassigned to Paris after its liberation, where he helped restore and coordinate communications among the newly freed people. A quiet and gentle man, Al was a gifted photographer, a writer, a poet, and a lover of animals. He graduated from Columbia University, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Fine Arts, stopping just short of completing the dissertation for his PhD. Al worked as a Fine Arts librarian at Columbia University, and later at the Cleveland Museum of Art, having returned home to Cleveland to care for his elderly parents. Mike “Squid” Ayers, age 61, Devoted husband of Pat (Frey) (O’Toole) for nearly 27 years. Loving father of Devney Eileen; Beloved son of the late Madeleine “Mad” and Paul “Bud” Ayers; Loving brother of Bonnie Holzheimer, Cathy Carr (Don) and Margy Murray; “The Rock” was the beloved uncle of Beth, Megan, Tim, Lisa, Kate, Shannon, Meghan, and Jon; Loving brother-in-law of Katie Montgomery; Beloved nephew of Jack Wall (Mary Alice); favorite cousin of many and friend to all he met. Mike entered Hillcrest Hospital on 12/7 with blood clots in both legs, was diagnosed with Stage IV Cancer on 12/10, and left Hillcrest for Hospice of the Western Reserve on 12/21. He died peacefully, surrounded by family on 1/3/12. Throughout this excruciatingly painful ordeal, Mike maintained his personality and sense of humor. He was constantly joking, laughing and telling stories as only he could. He was blessed to have so many friends and relatives visit each day and died knowing how much we love him. Richard C. Rice, age 89. Beloved husband of Lois (nee Delamater) for 63 years, passed away October 19th. Loving father of Richard, Lindsey, Clark, and Daniel (Amy); Devoted grandfather of Kara (Matt), Margot (Adie), Kathryn (Sam), Alexandra, and C.J.; Brother of the late William C. and Charles B. Dr. Rice served as a Pharmacist Mate 1st Class in the US Navy in WWII serving on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He graduated from Adelbert College and the School of Dentistry Case Western Reserve University (1951). In 1953 he helped form the Dental Clinic at Highland View Hospital, where he served on the staff for over 28 years. He also served on the staff of Metro General Hospital. Dr. Rice taught Dental Anatomy at the Dental School and worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontics. He created a dental education television series that was used by the Cleveland Elementary schools for many years. He was an active member of the Cleveland Dental Society, where he served as President in 1970, served an extended term on the Board of Directors, chaired numerous committees, and served as delegate to the Ohio Dental Association. Dr. Rice was President of USA Section of the International College of Dentists 1983, International Councilman and trustee of the International College of Dentists Foundation. Under his initiation and direction the International Dental Student Exchange Program was developed and continues to grow annually. Dr. Rice was an active member and life elder of Disciples Christian Church. He and his wife Lois enjoyed traveling the world and were 50 year members of the Cleveland Skating Club. Stanley B. Kent, a legal scholar and consititutional law expert, age 86, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Beachwood, OH. Beloved husband of Suzanne Kent (nee Kurlander); Loving father of Thomas; Father-in-law of Sophie Arielle Kent; Grandfather of Greg and Alexander. Born in 1923, Kent graduated in 1941 from Cleveland Heights High School. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII, including a posting as a Japanese language specialist with Army Intelligence in Japan from 1944-1946. He received a B.A. in Japanese language from the University of Michigan. Kent was an attorney in private practice in Cleveland until 1975, when he became chief law clerk of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. Along with his legal work, Kent taught constitutional law in the Political Science department of Cleveland State University from 1975-1990. After retiring in 1990, he and his wife taught in the English as a second language program of the Shaker Heights School District. Betsy L. Beckwith (nee Lichtenfels), age 81, Beloved mother of Hugh F., Jr. (wife Lisa) and Cynthia B. Straffon (husband Peter): Loving grandmother of Tyler, Dylan, and Jack; Former wife of the late Hugh F. Beckwith. A talented actress, Betsy was a former member of the Hermit Club where she appeared as the lead in many plays. She was also a former president of the Music and Drama Club of Cleveland where she originated and performed many programs for its membership. In addition, Betsy was a valued employee of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes for 17 years where she worked in several capacities including as Development Officer. In 1992 she took her many talents to the Realty One office in Shaker Heights where she answered the phone with her mellifluous voice until her retirement in 2006. Betsy’s witty sense of humor, sweet nature, way with words and staunch resilience brought joy and laughter to all who knew her. She leaves behind many dear and devoted friends. Her love of gardening and great pride and affection for her home of 30 years in Cleveland Heights were also among her many passions. Most of all she will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. A memorial reception celebrating Betsy's life will be held at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, 2600 South Park Blvd., Shaker Heights, on Saturday, June 19, 2010 from 4-6pm. Interment private. While serving in Korea, Ed was captured and held as a prisoner of war until he was able to escape and reunite with his unit. Ed had many friends and they will miss his sense of humor and his stories.
