Religious Service: Tuesday 10:30am October 13, 2009 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church
Visitation: Tuesday 9:30am until time of service October 13, 2009 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church

Martha E. MacKenzie (nee McCoy), born on August 1, 1917 was reared on a dairy farm in Washington, Pennsylvania. Martha received a B.S. in Education at California State College, Pennsylvania in 1942 and an M.A. in Education from Case Western Reserve University in 1948. She continued post-graduate work at Case Western and John Carroll University for many years. Martha was an educator for over 42 years. She taught elementary school in Washington, Pennsylvania from 1938 to 1947. Martha met Alexander J. MacKenzie (Mac) during World War II, when he attended in-training in the area. Following their marriage, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they lived for over 50 years. Martha continued her teaching career in the Cleveland School System from 1938 to 1947. Following the birth of her daughter, Janet, Martha tutored homebound children and was a private reading tutor for a child psychiatrist. In 1961, Martha joined the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District where she worked until her retirement in 1988. She was a remedial reading specialist at a number of elementary schools, then an assistant principal at Roxboro and Boulevard Schools for over 10 years. She had a passion for teaching and making every student who crossed her path into an avid reader. She was a very popular teacher to the point that petitions from parents were submitted when the district announced plans to transfer her from Roxboro to another school. Martha was widely-recognized for inspiring children and making reading a magical, marvelous experience available to every child by adding the ingredients of her own enthusiasm, her respect for each child, and her own love of reading to a sound curiculum. She was a widely sought-after private tutor throughout her career. Following her retirement, she continued her involvement with teaching by subutitute teaching and later serving as an Ohio Reads Tutor in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst School System until she was in her mid-80s. Martha was a lifetime member of Delta Kappa Gamma an honorary sorority for women in education and one of the highlights of her career was being named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar and receiving the Ohio A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Fellowship in 1974. She spent the Summer of 1974 at Lady Spencer College, a constituent college of Oxford University, studying the British Infant School. Martha was a longtime member of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church, Orchard Hills Golf Club, the College Club, Sojourners, the Scottish Association of Northeast Ohio, Eastern Star and various ballroom dancing groups in the Cleveland area. In addition to these activities, Martha's broad and varied interests included skiing, doll collecting, bridge, bowling and traveling extensively here and abroad. She will be sorely missed by her daughter Janet and son-in-law Russ, whom she lived near in Denver during the last 8 years of her life. Her family will be eternally grateful for the loving care she received from the staff at Brighton Gardens of Lakewood and Reminiscence Unit in Lakewood, Colorado during the last years of her life.
